I joined Florian about two months after my son Patrick was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It goes without saying this was a challenging time and getting involved in Crossfit was a great way to channel emotions and energy in a positive way. Many of you have watched Patrick grow and progress over the years either by seeing him at the gym (maybe he shut the lights out on you mid-WOD?), at CFF kid-friendly events, through social media relationships with Nancy and/or myself, or most recently participating in Crossfit Kids which we have incorporated as part of his Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy. We are thrilled that CFF will be programming the Lift Up Autism WOD once again. “Lift up” really says it all because there’s a lot of lifting up needed to help individuals on the spectrum and their families reach their fullest potential. Learning skills that many take for granted like tying shoes, talking to a peer, or swimming can not only take years but often require assistance from professionals with extensive education in working with individuals with ASD. To give you perspective, Patrick worked with his therapist hours per day, several days a week, for months on end to simply learn how to play appropriately with his toys instead of “playing” with them by placing them in his mouth. These days he is working with us and his therapist, Megan, to do something most of us enjoy and do without even thinking about – eating dinner at Lewis’ (photo included)! If you join the CFF team for Lift Up Autism, funds raised will go to organizations that provide individuals with ASD access to care, treatment, support services and research. Depending on health insurance coverage, costs for these things might be covered in full, partially, or not at all. Some of us are fortunate to be able to provide opportunities for our loved ones, but other families cannot financially access services that will help their loved ones reach their fullest potential. Help us help these families in need by participating in Lift Up Autism!
